Jabuti Prize 2010

Book on precarious jobs, organized by CMS researcher and co-authors, wins Jabuti Prize in the category Economy and Business

The book "Flexible work, precarious jobs? A comparison of Brazil, France, Japan”, organized by Nadya Araújo Guimarães, Helena Hirata and Kurumi Sugita, won the 52th edition of the Jabuti Prize, in the category Economy, Administration and Business. The prize is one of the most prestigious in Brazil. Nadya Guimarães is diretor of the National Institute of Science and Tecnology Centre for Metropolitan Studies (INCT CEM).

The result of this phase of the contest was announced in 1st October. Each winner will receive R$ 3.000 (US$ 1.150) and a silver statue of a turtle (in portuguese, a "jabuti"). The prize cerimony will take place in 4th November, when the best fiction book of the year and the best non-fiction book of the year will be appointed - the winner in these categories will receive R$ 30.000 (US$ 11.500) and a golden "jabuti".

The director of CMS' book is a collection of texts from the international symposium "New forms of employment and unemployment: Brazil, Japan and France in a comparative Perspective", published by Editora Edusp. Consisting of eleven texts by authors of the three nationalities, it presents a comparative approach between different situations relating to labor issues. The theoretical analysis is divided in two parts: the first focuses on the economic dynamics and the labor market; the second focuses on the experiences related to precarious work and long-term unemployment.

Besides being director of INCT CEM, professor Nadya Araújo Guimarães has a Doctoral Degree on Sociology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, is professor of the Department of Sociology of Universidade de São Paulo, where she coordinates the post-graduation programme.

Professor Helena Sumiko Hirata has a Doctoral Degreee on Political Sociology from Universite de Paris VIII. Today she is directrice de recherche (DR 2) do CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) on laboratory GTM (Genre, Travail, Mobilités) associated to Universidades de Paris 8-Saint-Denis e Paris 10-Nanterre anda invited rearcher from CMS/CEPID from October 2009 to October 2010.

Professor Kurumi Sugita has a Doctorat de 3e cycle d'anthopologie sociale pela Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1981). Today she is Chargée de Recherche of Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.
