The seminar "Income concentration among the rich in Brazil: past, present and future" was a presentation by the IPEA researcher, Pedro HG Ferreira de Souza (PhD in Sociology, University of Brasília) with the empirical results of his doctoral research .

On it he used income tax tabulations of individuals to estimate the concentration of income at the top in Brazil since 1926. The results are interpreted in the light of the country's political-institutional history and complemented by international comparisons and in the later period with other sources of information for Brazil, highlighting the controversy over the fall of inequality in the last decade.

The researcher also discussed in this paper the revisionist hypothesis of Jeffrey Williamson about the recent origins of Latin American high inequality and examines how the Brazilian case contributes to a broader understanding of the dynamics of inequality. Finally, he evaluates future possibilities based on a hypothesis of institutionalist work, which favors crises and ruptures as key moments for redistribution.

Profile of the conferencist: Pedro HG Ferreira de Souza is a researcher at the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), Master in Sociology from the University of Rio de Janeiro (Iuperj) (2007) and PhD in Sociology from the University of Brasilia (2016) .
