Social Inequality and Inclusion in Contemporary Brazil

Brazil is home to the second-largest Afro-descendant population in the world. While the country’s racial inequalities have long been documented, Brazil’s social landscape has changed enormously in recent years.

In 2010, Brazil became the only minority-majority nation in the Americas. A comprehensive collection of race-based affirmative action policies, combined with a broad set of social policies, has been implemented in the last fifteen years. These changes raise important questions for how the treatment of racial inequalities has unfolded in the Brazilian context: What are the current levels of inequality among the white, brown, and black populations in Brazil? How can we understand the persistence of racial disparities? How does race classification take place in Brazil? How do affirmative action policies work in Brazil?

The “Race Inequality in Brazil” workshop assembles experts on racial inequality in Brazil and will be an opportunity to reflect on and debate important questions facing Brazil and Brazilians of all races.
