In the beginning of 2009, the Center for Metropolitan Studies published the study “Indicadores Ambientais e Gestão Urbana: Os desafios para a construção da sustentabilidade na cidade de São Paulo,” an initiative of São Paulo's Municipal Green and Environment Secretary (SVMA) with the technical support of the Center for Metropolitan Studies. The book reveals the complexity of intra-urban realities in the city's territory, in which the heterogeneity of different regions, usually observed in socioeconomic terms, also applies to the diversity of environmental conditions.

A high level of variety in regard to the problems and environmental pressures in the different urban spaces has been verified in the City of São Paulo. The city and its metropolitan region face a scenario nearly on the brink of sustainability's limit because of the increase of urban immobility, and also because several of the areas that deliver environmental services are compromised. In addition to these issues, global weather changes are also uncertain. The actual situation leads obligatorily to the incorporation of new paradigms, especially those regarding housing and transport.
