The chapters gathered in this book adopt a perspective centered on the relations between State and society, which takes the processes of democratization and de-democratization as a result of the political confrontation established between alignments of antagonistic social forces: the elites and the political authorities.
The emphasis on a broad understanding centered on confrontational and collaborative interactions between political agents active in institutional and societal arenas offers innovative perspectives for analyzing the processes of ongoing democratic erosion. By taking as an assumption that institutional and extra-institutional politics are interdependent and mutually influence each other, the authors gathered here point to an instigating research agenda focused on the effort to understand how the current disputes over access to public resources and the political direction of society, in a political context characterized by the advance of the extreme right, produce and are the result, at the same time, of changes in the patterns of social mobilization and activism.
