PHASE I: 2001-2004
From 2001 to 2004, initial research was developed under the project Cepid/FAPESP. The CMS had partnerships with the Seade Foundation, The School of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU), USP, the School of Communications and Arts (ECA) at USP and SESC/SP.
- Leisure and cultural practices in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP)
- Religious dynamics in the MRSP
- Characterization of the sociodemographic profile of the television audience in the RMSP
1. Leisure and cultural practices in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP)
It seeks to identify what kind of options the inhabitants prefer concerning cultural practices, either in erudite or popular manifestations. It tries to detect new practices, new sociability forms, new uses of the public space, uses of the private space and the control of equipment or goods of a cultural nature. In this way, the research will be able to characterize the different sort of existent publics and their behavior (closeness or distance) to certain practices.
Surveying cultural equipments in the MRSP
Gathering information about the cultural equipments available in the MRSP – not foreseen in the original project for the CEM’s Culture Area – is a set of databases composed of all private or public cultural equipment (cinemas, libraries, theatres etc.) and also buildings under government trust. Updated to 2002, the database is essential for the spatial analysis that is required from the results of the the survey on cultural practices and use of leisure time. Two publications have already dealt with these data: “Os equipamentos culturais na cidade de São Paulo: um desafio para a gestão pública” and “Equipamentos e serviços culturais na região central do município de São Paulo” (forthcoming).

2. Religious dynamics in the MRSP
This research departs from the transformations in the Brazilian religious area for the last three decades. Such changes - faster in large urban centers – is the result of diversifications in the religious alternatives and the intensive religious “transit” among the believers of these new options. The general proposal of this project is to be able to draw the current configuration of this field and to understand how religiosity is appropriated in a metropolis, emphasizing the following aspects: the religious ‘transit’, observing not only the people that change religious affiliation but also the practices and beliefs; the occupation and the use of the City by the religious; and the solidarity network that is formed by them, helping some of these people to increase their social inclusion in the society.

3. Socioeconomic characterization of television viewers in the MRSP
The project aims to characterize the socioeconomic profile of the television viewers in order to understand cultural practices in a metropolis. The project compares the consumers’ point of view (through an audience survey) with the citizens’, analyzing the disjunctions between the market and the society. The research will use an original collection of documents from Ibope, which has been deposited in the University of Campinas (UNICAMP).
