La ségrégation sociale a-t-elle augmenté?

19/10/2006 17:30

French researcher debates segregation at USP Edmund Préteceille (Sciences Po). He comes to São Paulo on an invitation from FFLCH-USP and CMS; he is in Brazil in the scope of covenant CNPq/CNRS, that coordinates jointly with Dr. Adalberto Cardoso, from IUPERJ. “Has social segregation increased?” is the question that drives the seminar with Prof. Dr. Edmund Préteceille (SCIENCES-PO) on Thursday, 10/19, at 17h30, at the Philosophy and Social Sciences building at USP. The meeting is coordinated by professors Heitor Frugoli (Anthropology), Eduardo Marques (Political Science, director of CMS) and Vera Telles (Sociology).

The French sociologist came the Brazil in the scope of the covenant “Inequalities, segregation and urban politics. Convergences and divergences between big cities in the globalization: Paris, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo,” for CNPq/CNRS. At FFLCH, he is going to present a study carried out in the metropolitan region of Paris, through which was observed a tendency that contrasts with common sense: using the idea that the social segregation in the big centers concerns the groups “less favored,” or more vulnerable economically, Préteceille shows that the high classes are the more segregated in the Parisian space. The other standards of segregation observed were relative to professional categories, or connections to the work—most noticeably, between workers. The increase of unemployment affects the middle class, delimiting a new space for the segregation, which deserves more attention.
