Special seminar ”National Models and Local Urban Settings: Youth Ethnicities in Working-class Neighbourhoods of Paris and London”
POST-EVENT
Agathe Voisin, researcher from the OSC (Observatoire Sociologique du changement), Science Po/Paris, presented the seminar “National models and local urban settings: youth ethnicities in working-class neighbourhoods of Paris and London”, based on her doctorate researches. The investigator addressed the issue following two axes: How ethnicity is modeled on France and Britain and how young people use ethnicity to invent new forms of individuality. In her presentation, she compared the characteristics of the societies of both countries (post-industrial and post-colonial societies, that adopt opposite models and national philosophies), issues of national identity, civic and political integration, among others. The field research was carried out in the suburbs of Boudy (Paris) and Newham (London), and qualitative research looked at young people aged from 15 to 25, with several family profiles and education trajectories.
