POST-EVENT

On September 22, 2011, Gabriel Feltran presented a seminar on politics and violence in the outskirts of the City of São Paulo.

The professor of UFSCAR and researcher at CEM, Gabriel Feltran, hosted “The state on the border: political and social 'life of crime' on the outskirts of São Paulo.” The presentation was focused on his research on the outskirts of São Paulo, especially the one which resulted in his doctoral thesis (2008) and that generated the book “Fronteiras de Tensão,” soon to be released.

In his lecture, the researcher said that one cannot think of crime as the world relative to the exclusion from the state. He pointed out that the suburbs should be considered an arena of symbolic production, and instances of illegal market power, i.e., a set of social relations. He addressed in detail the changes that have occurred on the outskirts of the City of São Paulo since the 1960s. He also laid out a detailed analysis of the history of the PCC organization.

The seminar took place in FFLCH in the Social Sciences building, at the University of São Paulo, and was organized by the Center for Metropolitan Studies and the Department of Political Science at the University of São Paulo.
