Urban Power: Democracy and Inequality in São Paulo and Johannesburg
The Graduate Program of the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP), in partnership with the Department of Sociology at FFLCH-USP and the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM-Cepid/Fapesp), is hosting the seminar** “Urban Power: Democracy and Inequality in São Paulo and Johannesburg” **on April 3 at 5:00 PM, featuring Princeton University Professor Benjamin Bradlow. The event will be held in person in Room 14 of the Social Sciences Building and will be livestreamed on the FFLCH-USP YouTube channel.
Bradlow is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Princeton University, with a joint appointment at the School of Public and International Affairs and the Department of Sociology. He is also a Visiting Researcher at the Southern Center for Inequality Studies at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar in the research program on "Humanity's Urban Future."
Bradlow's research explores the connections between climate change, urbanization, technological transformation, and the political challenges for democracy faced by societies worldwide. He is the author of the book “Urban Power: Democracy and Inequality in São Paulo and Johannesburg” (Princeton University Press, 2024) and is currently working on his next book, “The Climate Hinge: Green Industrial Transitions in the Global South”.

Established in 2000 and operational since 2001, the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) is one of the Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (Cepid) of the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp). Recently, it was also recognized as a Special Research and Innovation Center (CEPIx-USP) at the University of São Paulo. CEM brings together researchers from various institutions to conduct advanced research, knowledge dissemination, and technology transfer in the Social Sciences, focusing on inequalities and public policy formulation in contemporary metropolises.
