The analysis is part of the study Social networks, sociability and segregation, developed by professor Eduardo Cesar Leão Marques, in the Centre for Metropolitan Studies (CEM), an interinstitutional group which is part of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of USP.

Books think urban violence
With 10% of global cases of murder, Brazil has developed a rich tradition of studies on urban violence. Books record pioneering experiences of social scientists, lawyers and human rights activists, reveal new names in the area and discuss the relationship between poverty and crime.

A study conducted by the Centre for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) in partnership with the Ministry of Cities mapped the evolution, throughout the 2000s, of the management tools of public housing policy in Brasilian cities.

The number of cities that have councils and funding for housing increased from 14% to 42.6%, from 2004 to 2009, according to research.

There are about thirty proposals for subdivision of Brazilian states. Some of them are in course in the National Congress. The motivations range from demands for a greater presence of public power in remote areas of the capital, to the accommodation of regional political and economic performance of certain localities. The Ipea conducted technical studies on the issue. One thing is certain: decisions of this magnitude require not only maturation of projects, but detailed studies of its impact on development.

The book "São Paulo, Novos Percursos e Atores" organized by Eduardo Marques and Lucio Kowarick presents new figures obtained by the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) on the city of Sao Paulo. The book comprises 15 essays by researchers and scholars who approach the city on multiple disciplines and aspects. The book is organized into four parts: "living and dwelling in the city", "work and production", "politics and representation" and "sociability, and everyday violence."
